What is your background and what made you want to go into care?
My background is within business, I was working in finance and compliance. I heard about the My Care Portfolio course from my sister and she recommended me to speak to Saf (Business Development Manager at Embark Learning) and I do not regret speaking to him. The first contact was great and the course was well explained to me by Saf, all opportunities were clearly outlined to me.
What were you nervous about when joining the course – how did this change as the course progressed?
I was most nervous about the change and how I was going to cope studying to be a Health Care Assistant. Although I have some knowledge of care, working in the sector is different. The support I had from the Trainers and the rest of the team made it easy.
How has My Care Portfolio improved your knowledge of the care sector?
I have learnt how to deal with people in care who have challenging behaviours, how mental health affects the lives of service users and those who care for them. This course made me understand more about how my personal behaviour and attitude can affect my service user.
What did you enjoy most about the course and how has it made you feel prepared to work?
I enjoyed the practical training most. I had the opportunity to understand how to operate machines such as the hoist and stand aid to assist in care. I also enjoyed learning how to safeguard service users and the importance of person centred care, which I can apply not only to work but also to my daily life. The course also has made me understand more about conditions like dementia and how it can impact our lives.
My Care Portfolio has made me more confident in providing care, considering never doing care as a profession. I’ve gained more of an understanding on how to work with vulnerable people, how to control infection control as well as responding to first aid calls.
What would you say to someone who was considering applying for My Care Portfolio?
I would definitely encourage someone to complete My Care Portfolio as it provides detailed information for those who are already in care and also for those who have never done care.
